Complete recording of organ works of Louis Vierne (1870-1937)
by Christine Kamp

The Franco-Dutch organist Christine Kamp has documented the complete organ works by the blind composer and organist Louis Vierne. Over the next few years, the Festivo label will release a unique series of five double cds. Apart from the well-known Organ Symphonies and Pièces, the recordings will include also Vierne's early works, both Messes basses and his compositions for organ and various instruments. This will put in a different light not only the organ style of this French composer, but also his position in pre-war France. Combining the harmonic richness of late Romanticism with the atmosphere of Impressionism, Vierne's oeuvre is considered a vital link between composers such as Franck, Fauré and Debussy. Festivo's special recording techniques create quite a clear and detailed reproduction of Vierne's virtuoso-polyphonic cathedrals of sound.Recordings are taking place on several monumental French Cavaillé-Coll organs, this type of instruments doing full justice to Vierne's expressive idiom. Thanks to both intensive collaboration with the American Vierne specialist and musicologist dr Steven Young and connections with French fellow organists, who may be considered heirs to the Vierne tradition, Christine Kamp can make use of the latest opinions as to how to perform Vierne's organ works. This is of great importance to her way of performing and interpreting Vierne's organ works.

The press:
Christine Kamp is playing these generally profound and often dark
compositions in fine style and with great musical tone.
This first volume's great qualities make one look forward to the next volume.
As yet, Kamp may not be quite as famous, but with her sublime achievements, she is deserving of an international career.
Christo Lelie - Trouw 29 June 2000
Christine Kamp, a young and gifted organist As to showing the depth of these compositions, Christine Kamp is possessed of remarkable empathy.
Herman van Hartingsveldt - Nederlands Dagblad 15 July 2000
The Dutch Strasbourg-born organist Christine Kamp speaks and plays French almost without an accent. And what is left of this (very) slight Germanism might even be an advantage to this ever so sad music of Vierne ...it is an excellent respect-commanding registration of great impact. Let us hope these complete works will be continued and achieved: they might well turn into a piece of reference.
Guy Bovet - La Tribune de l’Orgue 52/3
Christine Kamp demonstrates she is a natural at playing Vierne.
Both technically and musically she puts up a superb performance.
Willem Jan Cevaal - Organist en eredienst 10-2000
This first double CD goes to show that Christine Kamp, organist of the Grote Kerk at Weesp since 1996, is the right woman for playing this often impressive and ever 'organic' music, in which Vierne employs various styles and, as to idiom, has matured in an aurally perceptible way. Christine Kamp performs this music with the requisite grandeur if need be, displaying a keen sense of moments of intimacy of which quite a few can be found in Vierne's music.
I would venture to call this double CD a perfect start to a significant project.
